3/22/2020: Things Jesus WASN’T Part 4….complicated

This sermon looks at a short story where Jesus answers the earnest question: what is the greatest commandment? In other words: WHAT MATTERS MOST? Don’t we wonder that in these days of COVID-19 more than ever? Jesus boils the life of faith down to loving God and loving our neighbor. It’s simple, but it’s sure not easy…. think and pray about this with us.

3/15/2020: Things Jesus WASN’T Part 3: …..powerful!

This sermon considers what it means that Jesus is not powerful in the ways that the world thinks of power. We are living in a truly scary time with COVID-19 where we all feel pretty powerless. Yet Jesus gives us what we really need–the power of sacrificial, unconditional love.

This sermon was recorded in an empty sanctuary out of adherence to “social distancing” recommendations from CDC. What does it mean to be church in this time and to be a good neighbor? Pray with me about this as we journey together….

3/8/2020: Things Jesus WASN’T PART 2: He wasn’t…the “greatest”

This sermon continues on with the theme of checking in with our expectations of Jesus and learning what He was really about and what He is really trying to do in our world. This week, we consider how much Jesus was different from the world’s definition of greatness and glory. If we re-define those things for ourselves, perhaps our ambitions might change and we might experience more peace.

3/1/2020: THINGS JESUS WASN’T PART 1: He wasn’t…our golden ticket

We are entering a new sermon series with the season of Lent! This  series will continue on in the gospel of Mark and help us to examine our expectations of what our savior should look like as compared with what Jesus actually came to do and to be for us. Many of our concepts of these things in the series are based on values of our world and culture and not on Jesus values.

The series will follow this timeline:

    • March 1: Jesus was NOT…our golden ticket
    • March 8: Jesus was NOT…the “greatest”
    • March 15: Jesus was NOT…powerful
    • March 22:  Jesus was NOT…complicated
    • March 29:  Jesus was NOT…safe
    • April 5: Jesus was NOT…who He seems
    • April 12: Jesus was NOT…dead!!!

2/23/2020: Losing Life to Save It-What Does Jesus Mean?

This sermon considers two stories set side by side in three of the four Gospels: Jesus’ glorious transfiguration on the mountaintop (showing the world that He is truly God) in contrast to His scary prediction about dying on the cross in days to come (like a common criminal). How do we make sense of a God like this and how do we live as followers of that God?
