This week we continue our Advent sermon series connecting the story of “It’s a Wonderful Life” to the good news of Jesus coming into the world. In particular, we consider the difference between happiness and joy—how we can work towards a joy that is not dependent on external circumstances. What may look dark is actually about to receive the light of the world!

We continue our Advent sermon series tying the beautiful story of “It’s a Wonderful Life” to the story of Christ being born into the world. This week we focus on the theme of peace: how can we be more at peace with ourselves, others and the world in this season?

Today is the first Sunday in Advent, kicking off a sermon series focused on the film “It’s a Wonderful Life” and its connections to the lessons of our familiar Christmas story. In particular, what does this film and its ups and downs have to say to us during this waiting time? What hope can be found within the hurry and chaos of preparing for the holidays?

This sermon considers the Bible’s wisdom for changing times (even scary times) and considers how the church is called to be a witness on November 9 — when the powers that be go through transition, who are we called to be in the world?
