1/17/2021: A-Ha Dialogue Sermon Series WEEK 3

We are in a sermon series for Epiphany Season!
Last week we heard from Rev. Jose Lopez Chapa about how he had an epiphany moment that changed his views on living with difference. This week (MLK Weekend and the PCUSA Race Relations Sunday), we hear from Rev. Steve Tillett about how his life experiences taught him that we are much more alike than different, but we need to learn to listen to each other. Rev. Tillett is the pastor of Asbury Broadneck UMC right down the street from us; the church that usually brings us the amazing winter gospel concert at Pits Stop. You will love what he has to say.
(For more information on his book Stop Falling for the Okeydoke, go here: https://connecting-the-dots-llc.com/)
More than ever, we need to hear from alternative voices in this time; voices that challenge us to question God’s movement in this divided world and our place in it. Enjoy these conversations! I pray you would be as challenged and enriched as I was!

1/10/2020: A-Ha Dialogue Sermon Series WEEK 2

Last week we heard from Rev. Tim Hughes about how he reconciled his identity as a pastor and an LGBT person beloved by God. This week, we hear from Rev. Jose Lopez Chapa about how living with a dual identity (American citizen and child of immigrants) helped him come to a nuanced theology of difference. More than ever, we need to hear from alternative voices in this time; voices that challenge us to question God’s movement in this divided world and our place in it. Enjoy these conversations! I pray you would be as challenged and enriched as I was! –Pastor Jessie

1/3/2021: NEW SERMON SERIES BEGINNING TODAY

Pastor Jessie is excited to present: a new sermon series for Epiphany Season:
A-Ha Moments: New Voices Shedding Light
From January 3rd through the beginning of Lent in February, worship will feature weekly dialogue style sermons (lasting only about 15-20 minutes) with colleagues who I respect, but whose voices our largely homogenously white and politically purple church may not be hearing from. (For example: black pastors, LBGT pastors, children of immigrant pastors, folks with disabilities, etc)
I think this year more than ever, we need to amplify voices like these in our own lives and really listen to what they have to say to us about God, our spiritual journey, our brokenness and our hope. Each week will also feature a scripture that they have chosen, and I will be leading the rest of the service, but I am so pleased that our technology in these pandemic times will allow these new voices to shed light. I pray for many “a-ha” moments for us all!

12/20/2020: FIRST EVER VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS CANTATA

COA presents: CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?

We give many, many thanks to Butch Rodak, who was the creative mastermind that arranged the music and even composed his own original song for this production. We also thank Mike Jarjoura for organizing the recording of all the various singers and instrumentalists and Anna Latta for a gorgeous job with video and editing everything to make it one beautiful masterpiece that we can enjoy for many Christmases to come.

12/13/2020: Jesus’ Other Father Joseph WEEK 3 (Advent)

This last week of this short sermon series, we explore Joseph’s role in the life of Jesus and in our Christmas story. This week, we fast forward to Jesus moving into his adult ministry. We find that the people who know Jesus best from His hometown do not know how to accept who He really is. They call Him the “carpenter’s son”, and He winds up not being able to accomplish anything with them. Where also do we find that we think we know who God is and how we expect to encounter God?
