2/23/25: Help my unbelief FINAL WEEK: Life Everlasting

In this final week of our series on the Apostles’ Creed, we come to a belief with eternal significance: our belief in resurrection of the dead and life everlasting. We live in a culture that is death-denying, and what impact does this have on our beliefs about life after death? What kind of life is life beyond this world that we have come to know? How does Jesus’ resurrection help us to make sense of this belief? Is life everlasting about more than just some other place we call ‘Heaven’?

We will consider these questions as a believing community in this ongoing journey. It’s okay if it does not all make sense, or if you wrestle with doubt. We hope that you take comfort that we are all prayerfully pondering these things, and that none of us is alone.

2/16/2025: Help my Unbelief: Forgiveness of Sins (Jesus Part 2)

In this second to last week of our brief series on the Apostles’ Creed, we are turning our attention to Jesus as Redeemer and Savior. We will examine His crucifixion and think about what that tells us about God’s forgiveness of human sin. We will think about the dynamics of forgiveness in our own lives and churches, and pray together for hearts filled with the same grace shown to us in Christ.

2/9/2025: Help My Unbelief: HOLY cATHOLIC CHURCH/COMMUNION OF SAINTS

This week in our series on the Apostles Creed, we come a somewhat strange article of our faith. We believe in the catholic church—

note that the lower case “c” in “catholic” means the universal church, as opposed to the specific Roman Catholic Church. We believe that God has created us to be disciples as a community of saints; not perfect and not in competition. What does this look like across such a dizzying array of denominations, theologies and priorities in our world today? Can the Church universal still be relevant? What is our role in the Church in these times? What is it that we are professing belief in and why does our belief in the Church even matter? We will ponder these questions and many more as we continue to meditate on this centuries-old Creed.

2/2/2025: Help my Unbelief series: Holy Spirit

This week in our series on the Apostles Creed we come to one of the most perplexing pieces of our belief: the Holy Spirit.

The third person of the Trinity. Jesus’ promised presence continuing with us and in us, empowering our work in the world. Who is this being? What do we believe about it (or Her or Them?) What would it matter in our lives to believe in this Spirit? What does it mean for people like us Presbyterians to be “filled with the Spirit?” Join us as we ponder this awesome mystery as a community.

1/26/2025: Help my Unbelief series: Jesus (Part 1)

This week we return to our Epiphany Sermon series on the Apostles Creed and consider the statements about Jesus. We could never cover all that we need to know about Jesus Christ in one sermon on one Sunday, but this particular Sunday we will be considering His identity, His birth, and His life and teachings. In a future week we will consider more about the cross and resurrection. Who is Jesus to you? Do you believe He is fully human and fully God? Do you believe He was present with God at Creation? Do you believe He was born of a virgin? How much do these things matter? Let’s keep walking this road together.
